Created by Brazilians, this adaptive platform helps students to study according to their needs. He or she takes a test within the tool and discovers what subjects to study. Thereafter, he or she has access to classes and exercises on that particular subject. Teachers and the school can monitor the performance of every student of the school.

Problem: Studies based on solving standardized problems, which are later corrected by the teacher, leave gaps in the learning process. Students encounter difficulties in learning and memorizing certain themes and there is a lack of tools available that allow the educator to ascertain the needs of each student. In order to clarify what each student needs to practice, and to detect problems facing the school and teachers, Geekie Lab uses data and technology to personalize learning and give the student the tools required to develop his or her potential.

Solutions: The platform identifies the learning gaps of each student and suggests online classes according to their specific needs. When starting to use the tool, the student undergoes an assessment, which diagnoses their knowledge. Thereafter, the platform creates an individual plan which includes the content to be studied, through classes and exercises, according to the objectives proposed for the school term or year. This plan is adapted to the needs of each student and each updated tool.

Educators and the school can simultaneously monitor the performance of every student, class and year in the school. At the beginning and end of the school year, an assessment is applied using Item Response Theory (IRT) to identify the progress of all users. The tool also offers the possibility of applying simulations of the National Secondary Education Examination (ENEM). All of the content is developed by professors-authors and is enhanced during use.

Outcomes: Based on the diagnosis of the platform, each student can give extra attention to the subjects that they find difficult. This helps to save both their time and that of their teachers, who can help each student in the areas that give them most problems. The format of the studies empower the students, who know their weak points and discover how to improve them, thereby enabling the teacher to work less as a transmitter of content and more as a tutor. This is the first platform of adaptive education in Brazil and it has received approval from the Ministry of Education (MEC). The company serves more than 650 educational facilities. A survey conducted by Geekie in partnership with the research company Plano CDE, applied to students who used Geekie Lab in 2014, showed that each class completed contributed to an improvement of 1.6 points in the student’s grade in the final simulation. Grades increased by 30% among students who dedicated at least four hours a week for six weeks.
